The Copeland 985-0200-00 7/8" Discharge Temperature Thermistor is the OEM discharge temperature sensor built to clamp onto a 7/8-inch discharge line. It has a metal clamp bracket that holds the sensing element tight against the tube and a molded black base with two quick-connect (spade) terminals for the control wiring. Discharge-line temperature is the most direct warning that a compressor is under stress, so this sensor lets the control protect the compressor from overheating before the oil breaks down and the valves, scrolls or bearings are damaged.

High discharge temperature has recognizable causes: low refrigerant charge or a restriction that starves the compressor of cool suction gas, poor condenser heat rejection from a dirty coil or failed fan, a high compression ratio from low evaporator load, or internal leakage across worn valves. A failed or loose sensor can either trip the system for no reason or leave the compressor unprotected, so the symptoms are nuisance high-temperature shutdowns, erratic readings or an open-circuit fault. This part is a clamp-on device, so no refrigerant circuit is opened to install it: clean the 7/8-inch discharge line, clamp the sensor on with solid metal-to-metal contact, restore the original insulation and land the wires exactly as on the original. The clamp is sized for 7/8-inch tubing and will not hold properly on a different line size.

Key Benefits

  • 7/8-Inch Clamp-On Fit: The metal clamp bracket is sized for a 7/8-inch discharge line for firm, repeatable thermal contact.
  • No Refrigerant Work: Clamp-on installation means no recovery, brazing or evacuation to replace the sensor.
  • Quick-Connect Terminals: Two spade terminals connect the control wiring without splicing.
  • Compressor Protection: Gives the control discharge-line temperature data to guard against overheating damage.

Common Questions

  • What line size does it fit? A 7/8-inch discharge line. The clamp is sized for that tube; do not use it on a different diameter.
  • Do I need to recover refrigerant to change it? No. It clamps onto the outside of the discharge line, so the refrigerant circuit stays closed.
  • Where does it go and what else should I check? On the discharge line near the compressor, in the original location, insulated as before. If it was tripping, check refrigerant charge, condenser airflow and superheat before assuming the sensor is at fault.
