Weil McLain 511-724-254 Thermocouple
When you're dealing with a standing pilot that won't hold, the Weil McLain 511-724-254 30-inch Thermocouple is the specified OEM solution for restoring millivolt signal reliability. This is a screw-in thermocouple designed specifically for natural gas boilers, featuring the heavy-duty construction required for high-cycle commercial and residential environments. At a 30-inch lead length, it provides ample slack for proper routing away from high-heat zones, ensuring the copper capillary remains protected. Unlike universal alternatives that often require sloppy adapters, this Weil McLain OEM part threads directly into the pilot bracket for a precise, gas-tight fit.
This pilot safety sensor is engineered to generate the necessary voltage to hold the gas valve solenoid open under standard operating temperatures. It is the primary replacement for Weil McLain CG, CGa, EG, and EGH series boilers. As a veteran tech, you know that using a 30" exact-fit thermocouple prevents common nuisance lockouts caused by weak millivolt drop-off. If you’re seeing a pilot flame that hits the tip but won't stay lit after releasing the knob, swapping in this natural gas thermocouple is the standard protocol for boiler troubleshooting and maintenance.
Key Benefits for the Contractor- Exact OEM Match: Designed specifically for Weil McLain boilers, ensuring the tip sits perfectly in the pilot flame for optimal heat-to-millivolt conversion.
- 30-Inch Length: Offers flexible routing for CGa, EG, and EGH models, keeping the lead clear of burner interference.
- Screw-In Design: Provides a rigid, secure connection to the pilot assembly that won't vibrate loose during high-efficiency firing cycles.
- Natural Gas Optimized: Calibrated for the specific thermal properties of natural gas standing pilot systems.
- Reliable Safety Termination: Ensures fast gas shut-off if the pilot flame is extinguished, meeting strict HVAC safety standards.
- Will this work with LP (Propane) systems? This specific part is listed for natural gas applications. Always verify the orifice and thermocouple specs in the service manual for LP conversions to ensure proper millivolt output.
- Why is my pilot still dropping out with a new thermocouple? Check for millivolt drop at the gas valve connection. Ensure the connection is "finger tight plus a quarter-turn"—over-tightening can crush the internal lead and cause high resistance.
- Is this compatible with newer electronic ignition models? No, this is for standing pilot boilers. Units with intermittent pilot ignition (IPI) typically use a flame sensor or a different pilot-proving assembly.
