Carrier HC37GE228 Motor
The Carrier HC37GE228 Condenser Fan Motor is a high-performance 1/5 HP, 208-230V single-phase motor designed for reliable operation in residential and light commercial condensing units. Operating at 810 RPM, this 8-pole PSC motor provides the necessary torque for heavy-duty fan blades while maintaining efficiency. Built in the standard NEMA 48 frame (5-5/8 inch diameter), it features a totally enclosed (TE) housing to protect the windings from environmental debris and moisture, ensuring longevity in harsh outdoor conditions. As a direct replacement for HB37GQ228, it maintains critical mounting and performance specifications to simplify field installation for technicians. The motor requires a 5 MFD / 370V run capacitor for optimal operation. With ball bearings and a 1/2-inch diameter shaft, it is engineered for continuous air-over (CAO) duty, making it a rugged choice for service truck stock.
Key Benefits for Technicians:
- Broad Compatibility: Acts as the OEM replacement motor for numerous Carrier, Bryant, and Payne models, reducing the need for universal fit adjustments.
- Low Noise Profile: The 810 RPM motor speed is specifically tuned for quiet operation without compromising static pressure or airflow.
- Simplified Installation: Features thru-bolt mounting and standard wiring colors, allowing for a fast swap-out during high-demand service calls.
- Superior Reliability: Equipped with internal thermal protection and a totally enclosed air over (TEAO) design to prevent premature failure.
- Efficiency Grade: The Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) design maintains a higher power factor and lower amperage draw (approx. 1.2A) compared to shaded-pole alternatives.
Common Installation Questions:
What is the correct rotation for this motor?
The HC37GE228 provides clockwise rotation when viewed from the lead end (CWLE). Always verify your fan blade pitch matches this rotation to ensure proper heat rejection.
Do I need to replace the capacitor?
Yes, it is standard trade practice to replace the 5 MFD run capacitor whenever installing a new 1/5 HP 810 RPM motor. A weak capacitor is a primary cause of motor overheating and start-cycle failure.
Is the shaft length of the HC37GE228 compatible with the old HB37GQ228?
Yes, the Carrier HC37GE228 is the direct spec-for-spec successor to the HB37GQ228, featuring the same shaft diameter and mounting depth to avoid blade-to-coil interference.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Ask a Question-
I need to replace my fan motor on my carrier AC outside unit. I have a large unit and a small unit. The small unit has failed which I have replaced once already. This unit is a US motors K55HXSWF-7924. The large unit has this motor on it, hc37ge228. This one has been running great. Can I use this on the smaller unit as well?
Hi, please reply with both unit's completed unit model numbers so we can check. Thank you.
